Comments[0] Meekatharra - Western Australia

Meekatharra WA 6642 (Pop 1 200)

Meekatharra is an interesting mining town and pastoral service centre in WA’s Golden Outback located 762 km n-e of Perth. The name is thought to be Aboriginal meaning ‘place of little water’ which is an apt description for this desert township. Meekabtharra was established in 1890s following the discovery of gold nearby. The railway (1910) further helped ensure the town’s survival becoming a railhead at the end of the Canning Stock Route, a series of 54 wells. In recent years, Meekatharra became Australia’s first solar powered town.
