Melton is a Melbourne satellite city located 46 km n-w of the CBD. Original inhabitants were the Woiwurung Aborigines with white settlement beginning in 1850s. Melton, named after the English town Melton Mowbray, sits on a volcanic plain near two extinct volcanoes (Mt Kororoit & Mt Cottrell). The area developed around pastoral & agricultural industries however since 1970s, the city, which covers over 25 sq km, has experienced huge residential growth due to its proximity to Melbourne and Geelong. The district is also known for its fine wineries.
