Merriwa is a picturesque Upper Hunter Valley township on the Merriwa River 280 km n-w of Sydney. Pastoralists settled the area from 1820s and the district soon flourished. Today Merriwa is surrounded by vast mixed farming lands focusing on sheep, cattle, wheat, horse studs and increasingly, olive groves. It is also noted for its stately historic buildings including Old Colonial Cottage (1847) today the Meriwa Historical Museum..
