Mintaro SA 5415 (Pop 100)

 

Mintaro is a charming and beautifully preserved historic Clare Valley township 126 km north of Adelaide. Europeans settled the district from 1840s and the town’s prosperity grew from transporting copper and coal on bullock drays to and from mines and Port Wakefield. Mintaro was SA’s first town to be classified as a State Heritage Area (1984).

Historic Mintaro includes 20 historic sites (including 2 cemeteries) on a self-guided walk through town. Wineries – several small wineries and vineyards in town (Reillys Cottage, Mintaro Cellars).

Nearby:
Martindale Hall (3 km s-e) National Trust-listed Georgian style mansion (1878) now a guesthouse. Open (
11am-4pm) Mon-Fri and (noon-4pm) weekends. Polish Hill River Valley (6 km n-w) wine subregion (including Wilson Vineyard, Paulett Wines, Pikes Estate).
