Monto Qld 4630 (Pop 1 100)

Monto is a charming Gladstone hinterland region township on the Burnett Hwy 476 km n-w of Brisbane. Although the settlement was only established in 1924, the area had been utilized by pastoralists since 1840s followed by miners when gold was discovered in 1871. Today Monto is an important service centre to the surrounding rich dairy and cattle industries. It also acts as ‘Gateway to Cania Gorge National Park' (25 km n-w) featuring ancient Aboriginal rock art, stunning gorges and caves and breathtaking walks and lookouts. Lake Cania (11 km north) offers excellent watersports and fishing (permit required). Dairy Festival (June - even years), Gold Buckle Campdraft (Aug), Garden Festival (Oct).
