Moreton Island - Qld
Moreton Island is a large sand island of 170 sq km. It is located 58 km east of Brisbane and was named after the Earl of Morton. Its history includes shipping (with a number of shipwrecks) and a whaling station. Qld’s first lighthouse stands at the island’s northern tip. The huge Moreton Island NP covers most of the island with Mt Tempest (278 m) said to be the world’s highest permanent sand dune. The island has no roads, just 4WD tracks which require permits for self driving tours. Its only resort is at Tangalooma which is very popular for diving, snorkeling, fishing and whale watching. The island is mostly uninhabited.
