Mornington Island Qld
Mornington Island is situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria 2 240 km n-w of Brisbane. It covers about 700 sq km and is the largest of the 22 Wellesley Islands. The region is affected by tropical cyclones at irregular intervals. The main township is Gununa, a former mission, which is home to most of its population of 1 200. The largest tribal group are the Lardil but Yangkal and Kaiadilt Aborigines also inhabit the island. The area is self-governed via Mornington Shire Council.
