Mount Beauty is an ideal High Country holiday destination located 360 km n-e of Melbourne. It is nestled in the picturesque Kiewa Valley at the foot of Mt Bogong, Victoria’s highest mountain (1 986 m) and near the Alpine NP, serving as a base for summer visitors exploring the Bogong plains and winter guests skiing at Falls Creek (30 km south). Early pastoral settlement began in 1830s and Mt Beauty township was built in 1940s to accommodate the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme workers. Mt Beauty markets 1st Sat each month. Bogong Alpine Village (15 km s-e) pretty landscaped town built to accommodate hydro electric workers with its own pondage - Lake Guy providing good fishing and boating (with boat ramp) and a scenic 2 km walk around the lake. Tawonga Gap (13 km n-w) stunning lookout over the valley. Falls Creek (30 km s-e) Victoria’s most exclusive and expensive ski resort offering excellent downhill and cross country runs.
