Sugar Mill destroyed by Cyclone Larry

Mourilyan Qld 4858 (Pop 450)

Mourilyan is Tropical North sugar township close enough to Innisfail (8 km) to be a suburb. It sits on the Bruce Hwy 1 586 km n-w of Brisbane and is also the gateway to Mourilyan Harbour and Etty Bay. Mourilyan’s main source of employment, the sugar mill (1884) was devastated during Cyclone Larry (2006) as was much of the community. Of interest in and around Mouilyan is the Australian Sugar Industry Museum and Paronella Park, an estate built by a Spanish cane worker between 1930-46 but sadly mostly destroyed by various cyclone-induced floods.

Accommodation:
Mourilyan has a couple of hotels and a caravan park. Visitor Information Centre: Cnr Eslick St & Bruce Hwy, Innisfail. Tel (07) 4061 7422.
