Mundubbera Qld 4626 (Pop 1 000)

Mundubbera is a thriving Fraser Coast hinterland service town on the Burnett River 370 km n-w of Brisbane. Known as the ‘Citrus Capital of Qld’, Mundubbera is home to the ‘Big Mandarin’ and produces more than a third of the state’s citrus fruit. Although the area was settled by pastoralists in 1840s, the township was only established around 1910 and Mundubbera’s successful citrus industry was born in 1930s. Indigenous to the Burnett and nearby Mary River is a strange fossil creature, the lungfish that can breathe both by using gills and taking in air into a lung-like sac. Located 40 km s-w is the remote and rugged Auburn River NP featuring deep gorges, walking trails and bush camping. 4WD is recommended in wet weather. Tel Qld NPWS (07) 4153 8620.
