Narrabri is a Namoi River Valley township in Northern NSW 530 km n-w of Sydney. Original inhabitants were the Kamilaroi Aborigines who named the area meaning ‘forked waters’ which is appropriate for the way the various waterways branch off. Wheat planting (1873) and the railway (1882)  helped establish the settlement. Today major industries are cotton & primary industries. Nosh on the Namoi (food/wine) (Mar), Narrabri Show (Apr), Narrabri Innovations Festival (May), Antique Machinery Exhibiton (Aug), Spring Festival (Oct).

 

Tourist Attractions & Info:
Historic Narrabri includes original Courthouse (1864), 2nd Courthouse (1886), Old Lock-Up (1882) now the Heritage Centre and the Railway Station (1897).

 

Nearby:
Mt Kaputar NP (50 km east) magnificent 36 817 ha national park of rocky outcrops, numerous walking trails through forests of woodland & wet sclerophyll forests. At the northern end of the park (36 km e) is the spectacular ‘organ piping’ geological formation of Sawn Rocks. Rocky Creek Glacial Area and Waa Gorge both found on Bingara Rd. CSIRO Australia Telescope (25 km west) features the Southern Hemisphere’s most powereful telescope. Visitor centre open 8am-4pm daily. Yarrie Lake (32 km west) believed to be a meteor crater (1.6 km in diameter) and a haven for waterbirds & watersports.  Bellata (45 km north) small fossicking village of interest.
