Narromine NSW 2821 (Pop 3 500)

Narromine is a pretty Macquarie River service centre in Central West NSW 447 km n-w of Sydney. Originally occupied by the Wiradjuri Aborigines, squatters moved in during 1830s establishing wheat, citrus & mixed farming industries. The construction of the Burrendong Dam (1967) for irrigation purposes greatly enhanced primary production. Major industries today include cotton, fruit & vegetables, wool and wheat. National Gliding Championships (Jan), National Ultra-Light Fly-In Festival (Easter), Narromine Agricultural Show (Sept), NSW Gliding Championships (Dec).

Tourist Attractions & Info:
Macquarie River offers excellent fishing, boating and other water activities. Narromine Aviation Musuem, Narromine Aerodrome (QRM) just off  Mitchell Highway. Tel (02) 6889 7131. (4 km west). Aerodrome is home to Australia’s oldest aero club. Fascinating museum. Open (10am-5pm) Wed-Sun. Narromine War Cemetery, Parkes Rd.

Nearby:
Gin Gin Weir (42 km north) fishing and recreational area on Macquarie River. Goobang NP (50 km south) 42 000 ha with over 200 fauna and 460 flora species,  excellent views, bushwalks, camping and horse riding (permit required).
