Normanton is a Gulf Savannah region cattle town on the Norman River 2 087 km n-w of Brisbane. Originally an important port for the region’s cattle industry and subsequent nearby goldfinds, it was settled in 1860s. Today Normanton's economy is based around prawn fishing at Karumba and increasing tourism.  Barra Classic (barramundi fishing) (Easter), Rodeo (June), Normanton Races (July).

Normanton Railway Station,
Matilda St interesting National Trust building and home to the historic ‘Gulflander’ train. Originally built to deal with the flourishing beef industry, today it only makes the 140 km journey to Croydon once a week leaving 8.30am Wed/returning Thurs pm. Crocodile Statue, Council park is a life-size replica (8 m) of the largest known saltwater crocodile ‘Krys’ in the region that was shot in 1957. Original Well, Landsborough St was used by early settlers to draw water. Normanton Buildings include the Albion Hotel or ‘Purple Pub’ and Bank of New South Wales building (1896) now National Trust-listed and with many beautiful timber features.

Shady Lagoon (18 km s-e) ideal spot for birdwatching, wildlife & bush camping. Lakes (town outskirts) attract many native birds. Barramundi Fishing popular at

Norman River in Glenore (25 km s-e), Walkers Creek (32 km n-w) and along the Norman River banks & bridges. Burke and Wills Cairn (40 km s-w) last camp of the famous explorers. Bang Bang Jump Up (Matilda Hwy) interesting rock formation of a single hill on surrounding flat plains with stunning views. Kowanyama Aboriginal Community (359 km n-e) a permit is required to visit, camp and fish here and can be obtained through the Kowanyama Community Council.
