Northcliffe WA 6262 (Pop 280) 

Northcliffe is a picturesque SW corner timber town 361 km south of Perth. Early farming settlers arrived in 1860s with the township established in 1920s to service the Group Settlement Scheme which involved bringing British servicemen and their families to the area to clear and farm the lands. Lord Northcliffe, British media magnate, was a great advocate of the scheme which sadly failed completely due to harsh conditions and inexperience. Today Northcliffe is a popular stopping point for visitors wishing to access the surrounding D’Entrecasteaux and Shannon NPs with their virgin karri forests and other natural attractions. Tourist Attractions & Info:
Pioneer Museum, Wheatley Coast Rd housed within early Group Settlement School (1925) documents the difficult lives and conditions of the Group Settlers with interesting displays and memorabilia. Open (10am-2pm) Sept-May & (10am-2pm) Sat/Sun/school holidays June-Aug.

Nearby:
Northcliffe Forest Park (Wheatley Coast Rd) magnificent karri forests, wildflowers, prolific birdlife and scenic walking trails. Warren River (8 km north) excellent trout fishing and pristine beaches. Mt Chudalup (10 km south) large granite outcrop offering superb D’Entrecasteaux NP and coastal views. Lane Pool Falls & Boorara Tree (18 km s-e) 5 km return walk to pretty falls passing the Boorara Tree with its 50 m high fire lookout cabin. Windy Harbour (27 km south) only access point on the south coast between Walpole an Augusta where 4WD is not required. Many water sports are on offer as well as Point D’Entrecasteaux with its stunning limestone cliffs popular with abseilers and superb coastal vistas and Cathedral Rocks to view seals and dolphins. Pemberton-Northcliffe Tramway old-style trams operate daily through spectacular forested landscapes.
