Orbost is an interesting East Gippsland service centre on the Snowy River situated 371 km east of Melbourne. Original inhabitants were the Kurnai Aborigines and European settlement began in 1840s with early graziers. The rich surrounding district produces dairy & beef cattle, maize and timber with over 20 sawmills in the area. Australian Wood Design Exhibition (Jan) Craft Expo (Nov).

Forest Park, Nicholson St has several rainforest walks including the Koori Sensory Trail focusing on local plant species. Old Pump House, Forest Rd located behind an 1872 relocated slab hut. Orbost Historic Museum, Forest Rd interesting local history displays & memorabilia.

Cape Conron Coastal Park (26 km east) spectacular coastal scenery & excellent walks. Cabbage Tree Palms Flora Reserve (27 km east). Errinundra NP (54 km n-e) features rare temperate rainforests, eucalypt forests, numerous walking trails and excellent lookouts (Ellery, View, Ocean View & Mt Morris peak). Good camping and recreational facilities. Bemm River Scenic Reserve (40 km east) beautiful rainforests and recreational areas. Snowy River NP (42 km north) beautiful walks to Raymond Creek Falls (40 min return) & the Snowy River (1 hour further). Sydenham Inlet (58 km east) great fishing spot.
