Port Albert is a quiet coastal Gippsland village located 235 km s-e of Melbourne. This once vibrant and frantic port was the first established in Victoria with ships docking here from all over the world. Named in honour of Queen Victoria’s husband, the town thrived for many years due to its cattle trade proximity and nearby gold discoveries. Today Port Albert’s main function is as a supply port for Wilsons Promontory. Fishing Contest (Mar).

Port Albert Maritime Museum, Wharf St housed in the old Bank of Victoria building (1862) with interesting historic memorabilia, displays & artifacts. Open (10.30am-4pm) daily except winter months (weekends/holidays). Historic Port Albert includes Port Albert Hotel (1842), old Bond Store (1852), police station (1856), Derwent Hotel (1858), Post Office (1864).
Nearby:
Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park surrounds Port Albert and incorporates a number of offshore islands with prolific birdlife, Aboriginal middens and excellent fishing. Beaches include Manns (10 km n-e) (swimming) and Woodside (34 km n-e) (surfing). St Margaret Island (12 km east) wildlife sanctuary.
