Port Broughton SA 5522 (Pop 1 000/4 000 summer)
Port Broughton is a delightful historic Yorke Peninsula township on a Spencer Gulf inlet 171 km n-w of Adelaide. Originally inhabited by the Naranga Aborigines, European pastoral settlement began in 1850s with Port Broughton soon becoming an important fishing and wheat port. It was named after the river just north and its position at the northern end of the Peninsula ensures a warmer and drier climate than many of the more southerly coastal communities. The jetty’s commercial wheat usuage continued until 1940s and today the quiet sleepy atmosphere of the cooler months is replaced by a bustling holiday destination in summer sustained by both tourism and fishing.
