Quilpie Qld 4480 (Pop 670)
Quilpie is a remote Outback service and administrative centre situated 954 km west of Brisbane. It sits on the Bullo River in the state’s famous Channel Country and was established in 1917 as a rail centre for the district’s sheep and cattle stations. Quilpie is now better known as an opal town, particularly for the ‘Boulder Opal’. Mariala NP (130 km n-e) allows bush camping and recommends 4WDs. Diggers Races (May), Kangaranga Doo (Sept).
