Renmark is the Murray River’s oldest settlement located 250 km n-e of Adelaide. This large service town sits in the heart of rich Riverland orchard country growing citrus, olives, garlic and many other types of fruit. Original inhabitants were the Naralte Aborigines who named the area meaning ‘red mud’. The building of a vital irrigation system from 1887, saw the area flourish as it does still today. Historic Renmark includes the Renmark Community Hotel (1897) (Murray Ave), Olivewood (National Trust homestead and museum) (21st St), PS Industry (1911) (Murray Ave). Renmark North Lookout, (northern outskirts) great town and river views.

Lock & Weir No 5 (2 km s-e) picnic in pretty parklands. Paringa (4 km east) small pretty rural area with historic bridge (1927), park and Headings Cliffs Lookout. Lyrup (7 km n-e) an historic tiny village (1894) set up as an early commune as part of a SA government unique ‘communist’ experiment. Out of the original 10, it is the only one that remains. Murray River NP - Bulyong Island section (upstream) and popular for fishing, watersports and birdwatching. Bookmark Biosphere Reserve (between 50-90 km north) encompasses mallee country of Chowilla Regional Reserve and dry outback terrain (Danggali Conservation Park) featuring excellent exploring drives (2WD & 4WD), fishing, canoeing and birdwatching.
