Seymour is a pleasant rural, industrial and commercial centre on the Goulburn River 111 km north of Melbourne. Originally occupied by the Natrakboolok Aborigines, European settlement began in 1840s and was named after British Lord Seymour. The town became an important rail junction and following a history of army training encampments here, Puckapunyal camp was established in WWII and remains a major base today. Historic Seymour includes the Royal Hotel (1848), lock-up (1853), old primary school (1860), old Methodist parsonage (1860s), Prince of Wales Hotel (1863), old Court House (1864) (now Tourist Information Office), Town and Country Hotel (1865), old railway station (1872), Terminus Hotel (1897).
