Silverton is a fascinating Outback National Trust-classified township located 1 141 km west of Sydney. Sitting almost on the SA border, this virtual ghost town is full of historic buildings, galleries, museums and the Silverton Hotel whose walls feature photographs of various movie sets filmed here. Early explorers were followed by determined pastoralists in 1860s and silver chloride was discovered a decade later. Some frenzied years ensued with mines established and prospectors flooding the area. Eventually all the mines closed and today tourism sustains Silverton.
