Springsure Qld 4722 (Pop 800)
Springsure is an historic Capricorn hinterland country town 763 km n-w of Brisbane. Graziers settled the area in 1840s with a township established in 1860s. Sadly much of Springsure’s early history involves bloody conflicts with local indigenous tribes. Old Rainworth Historical Complex (10 km south) pays tribute to the Cullin-la-Ringo Aboriginal massacre (1861). Minerva Hills NP overlooks the town and features the stunning Mt Zambia and Mt Boorambool with a variety of wildlife, bushwalks and panoramic lookout. Carnarvon Gorge NP (70 km south) is characterized by excellent examples of Aboriginal art, sheer cliffs, rugged peaks and limestone caves. For camping details tel (07) 4984 4505. As the area around Springsure is extensively irrigated, sunflowers and other crops flourish. The Dawson and Gregory Hwys meet here.
