Stratford is a small picturesque East Gippsland service town on the Avon River 230 km east of Melbourne. The area was first settled in 1840s and prospered as a goldfields supply settlement. Today the local economy relies on dairying, sheep, cattle and horse breeding. The larger town of Maffra is just 10 km west. The Bataluk Cultural Trail focusing on Aboriginal sites, middens, history and culture passes through Stratford from Sale to Cape Conran.
