Strathalbyn is a delightful Fleurieu Peninsula historic town on the Angas River 56 km s-e of Adelaide. Originally inhabited by the Ngarrindjeri Aborigines, white settlement began in 1830 with a number of Scottish immigrants. Today, tourism and its role as an important rural service centre to the surrounding farms, orchards, vineyards and sheep & cattle properties sustain the local economy. Historic Strathalbyn (over 30 sites) including the Terminus Hotel (1840), Glenbarr (1842), St Andrew’s Uniting Church (1844), Robin Hood Hotel (1855), Argus House (1867), Town Hall (1874). National Trust Museum, Rankine St is housed within the old police station (1858) and court house (1867) with extensive historic displays, photographs and memorabilia as well as a stable, 3 cells and old farming equipment. Open (2pm-5pm) Wed/Thurs/Sat/Sun.
Nearby:
Lookout (7 km s-w) town and district views. Langhorne Creek (15 km east) small pretty village with several sandstone buildings, numerous excellent wineries and host of the annual Vintage Affair (May). Milang (20 km s-e) historic riverboat town and holiday destination on Lake Alexandrina popular for many types of watersports.
