Sunbury is an historic Macedon Ranges rural service centre surrounded by agricultural and dairying country. Located 42 km n-w of Melbourne, since 1960s it has evolved into a residential satellite town. Originally occupied by the Wurundjeri Aborigines, white pastoral settlement began in 1830 with wine production following in 1860s. Today numerous wineries are spread throughout the surrounding district. Dilkara Arts Festival (Feb), Sunbury Fair (Mar), Arts Society Exhibition (May), Sip-n-Sup Wine Festival (Aug), Agricultural Show (Aug).

Historic Sunbury includes ‘Emu Bottom’ homestead (1836), Sunbury Bridge (c.1870), ‘Rupertswood’ mansion (1874) and grounds Tel (03) 9740 5020, 'Priorswood’ (1878), old Court House (1885) (now Visitor Information Centre).
