Tambellup WA 6320 (Pop 300)
Tambellup is a quiet South West region service centre on the Great Southern Hwy. Picturesquely located on the Gordon River, it is 342 km s-e of Perth between Katanning (north), Cranbrook (south) and Gnowangerup (east). Sandalwood cutting began in 1870s followed by sheep farming – both still important industries today, together with grain growing and mixed farming.. The meaning of its Aboriginal name is not clear, however the town was named after an early station ‘Tambul-yillup’. Norrish Homestead, named after the area’s first European settler, is an interesting folk museum full of historic memorabilia and worth a visit. The magnificent Stirling Range NP (about 100 km south) comprises numerous peaks (15 over 900 m & 50 peaks over 600m) together with scenic bushwalks and hundreds of flora species.
