Tanunda is rural township situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley 70 km n-e of Adelaide. Early German immigrants arrived in 1840s and settled in Langmeil which later changed its name to Tanunda, an Aboriginal word.  The German influence was very strong and remains so today with Lutheran churches, German restaurants, bakeries, butchers etc. Barossa Vintage Festival (odd numbered years Apr), Barossa Jazz Weekend (Aug), Barossa International Music Festival (Oct), Brass Band Contest (Oct).

 

Tourist Attractions & Info:
Barossa Wine and Visitor Centre, Murray St features interesting local history and wine industry displays and information. Open daily. Historic Tanunda includes Auricht’s printing office (1855), St John’s Lutheran Church (1868), Tabor Lutheran Church (1871), Chateau Tanunda winery (1889). Barossa Historical Museum, Murray St (1866) housed within the old post and telegraph office focusing on the area’s German heritage.  

Nearby: Mengler's Hill Lookout (between Tanunda and Angaston) excellent district views. Barossa Wineries in abundance in the region. Bethany (3 km s-e) a charming early German settlement with a pioneer cemetery, creekside picnic areas, walking trails and pretty streetscapes.
