Taroom Qld 4420 (Pop 600)
Taroom is a Gladstone hinterland/Outback service centre 465 km n-w of Brisbane. It sits on the Leichhardt Hwy and Dawson River and early pastoralists settled the district in 1840s. Sadly the area has a tragic history of having annihilated the local Yeeman Aborigines who fought for their land against the white invaders. Taroom’s Historic Museum features detailed accounts. Expedition NP (128 km n-w) together with Murphy Conservation Park ((30 km north) and Glebe Weir (40 km n-e) offer walks, lookouts, birdlife and watersports. Leichhardt Festival (Sept).
