The Devils Marbles
Devils Marbles NT 0860
The Devils Marbles are situated within the 1 828 ha Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve 1 082 km south of Darwin and just 10 km north of the small settlement of Wauchope. According to Aboriginal Dreamtime legends, the ‘Marbles’ are believed to have been Rainbow Serpent eggs. These ancient stones have been formed by spheroidal weathering and erosion which is still taking place today due to the huge daily and annual temperature ranges in this harsh desert landscape. As with Uluru/Ayers Rock, the Marbles are best seen at sunset when the sun’s rays pick up the red iron minerals of the rocks. There is also a variety of wildlife to be observed here between the stunning ghost gum trees.
