Picture: True Outback
Tibooburra is located in Corner Country 1 504 km n-w of Sydney. It is famous as being the hottest and most isolated NSW Outback town. Original inhabitants were the Wongkumara, Wadigali and Malyangapa Aborigines and Tibooburra is said to mean ‘heaps of rocks’ referring no doubt to the granite outcrops nearby. Early pastoral holdings and gold discoveries (1881) accounted for European settlement here. Today the town functions as a service centre with some accommodation, stores and a National Parks office for the Sturt NP. Timooburra Festival (July), Gymkhana & Rodeo (Oct).
