Tumut is a pretty Snowy Mountains town on the Tumut River 423 km s-w of Sydney. Original inhabitants were the Wiradjuri Aborigines who named the town ‘doomut’ meaning ‘quiet resting place by the river’. European settlement began in 1829 with nearby gold mining (1860s), followed by dairy farming and a successful timber industry. Festival of the Falling Leaf (Apr/May).

Historic Tumut includes All Saints Anglican Church (1875), Police Station (1874), Court House (1878), Oriental Hotel (1876). Rotary Lookout, (Wynyard St) excellent town and river views. Tumut Museum, Capper St with interesting local historic memorabilia. Open (2pm-4pm) Sat & Wed. Pioneer Cemetery, Gocup Rd a number of notable gravestones. Stockwell Gardens, Russell St award-winning garden and WW1 Memorial. Tumut Broom Factory, Adelong Rd. Open (8.30am-4.30pm) daily. Free entry.
