Sliding Springs Observatory - Warrumbungles

Warrumbungles

Warrumbungles covers both the mountain range (originally part of a shield volcano) and the national park located 35 km west of Coonabarabran in NW NSW. There are nine extensive walking trails across the peaks with many rocky formations to explore. The park is home to a great diversity of fauna (wallabies, koalas, emus, kangaroos) and prolific birdlife (wedge-tailed eagles, parrots, kookaburras) as well the Siding Springs Observatory, the largest optical telescope and optical astronomy research centre in Australia.

Visitor Information Centre: Newell Hwy, Coonabarabran. Tel (02) 6842 1441 or 1800 242 881.
