Wee Waa NSW 2388 (Pop 2 300)

Wee Waa is a NW NSW rural service centre 548 km n-w of Sydney. It is known as ‘Australia’s Cotton Capital’ acting as the base for Australia’s largest cotton growers’ association (Namoi Cotton Co-Operative) and Cotton Seed Distributors selling seeds worldwide. The Kamilaroi Aborigines named the area which means ‘fire for roasting’ and European squatters began arriving in 1820s establishing agricultural and pastoral holidings. Cotton was only developed as a serious crop in 1960s greatly enhanced by the construction of the Keepit Dam. Some of Australia’s highest cotton yields have been achieved with improved irrigation methods and intensive research. Agricultural Show (Apr), Rodeo (Aug).
