Wilcannia Bridge over Darling River

Wilcannia NSW 2836 (Pop 770)

Wilcannia is an historic Outback port on the Darling River located 964 km n-w of Sydney. Original inhabitants were the Barkindji Aborigines whose many descendants still live in the area. Pastoralists arrived in 1850s and by 1880s, Wilcannia was a thriving centre and third busiest Darling River port. The town’s fortunes went into decline with the advent of road and rail traffic in 1920s. Today tourism sustains Wilcannia with its many fine sandstone buildings, paddlesteamer wharf and interesting bridge.
