Yarrawonga is an attractive Murray River town located 283 km n-e of Melbourne. It is also a popular holiday and retirement centre which is linked to its sister town, Mulwala (NSW) by a bridge. Original inhabitants were the Mulla Walla Aborigines with European settlement beginning in 1840s. The building of the Yarrawonga Weir and Lake Mulwala (pictured) as part of the Murray-Darling Irrigation Scheme (1930s) had a huge impact on the town and the productivity of its agricultural industries. Bush markets 2nd & 4th Sun each month. Rowing Regatta (Jan), Powerboat Racing (Jan), Linga Longa Festival (Oct). Yarrawonga also has Australia’s largest golf course with 45 holes.

Lake Mulwala 6 000 ha reservoir providing great fishing, watersports, birdwatching and paddle boat cruises. Pelican Island has a number of pelican and ibis breeding rookeries. Yarrawonga Tudor House Clock Museum, Lynch St excellent display of more than 400 clocks from all over the world. Open (10am-4.30pm) daily. Canning A.R.T.S. Gallery, Belmore St features works by local artists.

Cobrawonga State Forest (between Yarrawonga and Cobram) 2 500 ha river red gum forest rich in fauna, walking/driving trails, beaches and Cobrawonga Island. Boatrock (Savernake Rd) ancient Aboriginal bathing and watering hole.
