Yorketown is the southern Yorke Peninsula’s largest town located 226 km west of Adelaide. This major service town at the centre of a rich cereal growing area is surrounded by numerous inland salt lakes, some of which are still mined. European settlement began in 1840s with salt harvesting a major industry between 1890s-1930s. The town was named after the surveyor who laid it out in 1872.

Salt Lakes (surrounding town) comprise a vast network of lakes that sometimes appear pink due to the algae and climatic conditions. Granite Outcrops (10 km n-w) unique rock formations known as Bear Rock and Clown Rock. Corny Point (69 km n-w) pretty coastal village with a lighthouse, lookout and good fishing spots. Daly Head (75 km west) great surfing and a nearby blowhole. Innes NP (81 km s-w) rugged almost 10 000 ha park of coastal mallee, rocky headlands and many beautiful bays and beaches. Surfing at Chinamans Reef, Pondalowie Bay and West Cape with the annual Yorke Surfing Classic each Oct. Diving (The Gap), seasonal whale watching (Stenhouse Bay and Cape Spencer), fishing and walking all popular pursuits. There are over 110 bird species, kangaroos and emus and the historic old mining town of Inneston.
